Dear Councillor …,
On behalf of Com.It.Es NSW (the Committee of Italians Abroad in New South Wales), I wish to express our strong support for the proposed Bachelor of International Studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). We consider this program to be of great diplomatic and cultural importance and a strategic initiative that will further strengthen UTS’s reputation as a national and international leader in technology, education, and creativity.
The new Bachelor of International Studies offers a forward-looking model for how universities can sustain meaningful international and global engagement. By integrating multilingualism, innovation, and creativity, the program responds effectively to the evolving needs of institutions, governments, and communities, while preparing graduates for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
This initiative is also of particular relevance to the Italian community in Australia, which has long valued education, language, and cultural exchange as central pillars of its contribution to Australian society. Programs that foster intercultural competence and multilingual proficiency not only benefit individual students but also help sustain the deep and historic ties between Australia and Italy — ties that continue to enrich our shared cultural and diplomatic landscape.
Through its emphasis on linguistic, cultural, and intercultural communication skills, and its distinctive in-country study component, this program will enable students to connect theory with lived experience. Such engagement fosters the kind of cross-cultural understanding and global citizenship that our multicultural society values deeply.
We believe that adopting this model will consolidate UTS’s standing as a university with a genuine commitment to international education and global dialogue. Conversely, failing to implement such a visionary approach risks limiting both UTS’s influence and Australia’s broader capacity to act as an engaged and respected global partner.
Com.It.Es NSW is therefore pleased to lend its full support to the Bachelor of International Studies initiative and commends UTS for its leadership in fostering globally minded, multilingual graduates who will contribute meaningfully to Australia’s diplomatic, cultural, and academic engagement with the world.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Luigi Di Martino
President Com.It.Es NSW
